the sequence is a close mimic of the natural peptide antibiotic. In the natural form, there are multiple Dab (2,4-diaminobutanoic acid), which are represented here as lysines. The molecule is cyclic due to the formation of an amide bond between the amino group of Dab in position 4 and the carboxyl group of the C-terminus. Residue 5 is a D-amino acid and the N-terminus is attached by a fatty acid. It preferentially binds to LPS of Gram-negative bacteria and disrupts membranes. The fatty acid is critical for bacterial killing but not LPS binding. Because of such interesting properties, there is interest in developing polymyxin analogs. Updated 1/24/2014. Polymyxin B has Antimicrobial activity. Polymyxin B was found in Bacillus polymyxa.

| About TFA salt: | Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is a strong acid, which is commonly used to cleave synthesized peptides from solid-phase resins and is also used to improve HPLC performance in the peptide purification step. By default, custom peptides are delivered as lyophilized TFA salts, and can contain as much as 10-45% TFA. TFA in custom peptides can cause inexplicable discrepancies in subsequent assay data.
