Constitutively expressed in circulating NK cells. Active against Gram-negative bacteria such as Vibrio alginolyticus and gram-positive bacteria such as M. luteus, S. aureus, including MRSA. Bromotryptophans (probably at position 6 of the aromatic ring) are found in the peptide. Synthetic unbrominated peptides are as active as the modified natural form, indicating bromination is not critical for antimicrobial activity. It may, however, improve peptide stability to proteases (this ref). A helix-turn-helix structure (helix1: 5-8; helix 2:13-17) of hedistin in DPC micelles was reported by Xu et al (2009 Biochim Biophys Acta 1788: 2497-2508). Hedistin has Antibacterial activity. The source of Hedistin is coelomocytes, Nereis diversicolor.

| About TFA salt: | Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is a strong acid, which is commonly used to cleave synthesized peptides from solid-phase resins and is also used to improve HPLC performance in the peptide purification step. By default, custom peptides are delivered as lyophilized TFA salts, and can contain as much as 10-45% TFA. TFA in custom peptides can cause inexplicable discrepancies in subsequent assay data. For instance, TFA in nM concentrations has been shown to interfere with cellular assays, inhibiting cellular proliferation in some instances, and increasing cell viability in others. It has also been found to be an unintended allosteric modulator of the glycine receptor, GlyR.
